tasting: natural peanut butter and raspberry jelly on 12 grain bread, strawberry yogurt, carrot sticks; tonight: enchiladas, tortilla chips, and salsa
seeing: windows clean of doggie nose prints and winter grime
hearing: chirping birds and barking dogs through my open windows; conversation with my next door neighbor
feeling: soft, warm fur of the neighbor dogs; soft, warm fur of my dogs; warm, wet tongues of the neighbor dogs; warm, wet tongues of my dogs
smelling: fresh air (as fresh as it gets in the city… it’s completely different from fresh country air); lilies, mini-mums, gerbera daisies, and eucalyptus from the dining room table
Four years ago today, I made the biggest promise of my life when I said “I do” to my best friend.
We have small group tonight so we’re saving our main celebration for Saturday. It’s supposed to be mostly sunny and in the mid-60s, a most beautiful day! Contrast that with our wedding day four years ago when it maybe hit 40 and was probably below freezing when we left the church. (March is such a volatile month weather-wise.) It was still a beautiful day though. 🙂 We’re planning to take the dogs on a nice long walk in the sunshine, probably at Alms Park, and enjoy dinner at Nicola’s before seeing Othello at the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company.
We did manage to get out for lunch today, and it was nice to have time together in the middle of the day. Just because Jeff works at home doesn’t mean I actually get to see him that much during the day.
seeing: snowdrops blooming profusely at a neighborhood park; pictures of a friend’s brand new baby boy, born yesterday; online play-by-play of Illinois’ upset of Wisconsin in the Big Ten Tournament; moody gray storm clouds.
tasting: whole grain waffle with peanut butter and v8 fusion juice; turkey sandwich with pepper jack and lettuce; shortly: chicken cutlets with white wine and garlic, brown rice, and vegetables.
smelling: awful puppy breath. but now i have [new, unchewed] tools to combat it!
hearing: interviews on NPR that make me think. i went out twice today and on both returns sat in the stationary car to hear the conclusions. rumbles of thunder…the first thunderstorm of the year!
feeling: spring breezes on my bare forearms. thankful for the miracle of life.
I like traditions. My husband doesn’t care about them as much, but he goes along with them for my sake. A while back, I decided to institute a Sunday night tradition: breakfast for dinner. The last two weeks we’ve added another item to our Sunday nights: movies.
We love our Netflix membership and have been pretty good about using it enough to get our money’s worth. Even so, part of the impetus for Sunday Night Movie Night is to make certain we are doing just that.
This past week was my pick: Citizen Kane. I grew up watching all the old classics from the golden age of Hollywood, but somehow had never seen this perennial #1 classic.
It was brilliantly filmed and well-acted and I’m glad I’ve seen it, but I’m somewhere in the middle on how much I personally enjoyed it. The story is tragic, and I had already seen the famous ending scene that gives away the answer to the mystery of Rosebud. If I’d had the benefit of suspense, I think I would have liked it better.
Now I want to read up on its cultural significance at its release especially in regards to William Randolph Hearst. Personally I enjoyed its top of the list competitors a lot more: Casablanca, The Godfather, Gone With the Wind, and Lawrence of Arabia.
Today was mostly sunny and in the mid-60s. Hallelujah! I opened all the windows and it felt glorious, absolutely glorious. I even wore a t-shirt outside! I just keep reminding myself that it is still March and there is still time for it to get cold and even—dare I say it—snowy again. But I’ll take it as long as it lasts.
A close inspection of the yard and garden today found not only crocus blooming, but also the first shoots of hyacinth, daffodils, daylily, catmint, sedum, and aster. I have a feeling that catmint is going to be one of my new favorite plants. I’m so glad I substituted it into my plan last fall for my newest perennial bed.
Ah, the gardening bug is biting early this year! I can’t wait to get back at my flowers again and try more vegetables.
Back when I was in college, Xanga was a popular blogging platform. (This was before Facebook was mainstream!) It had its heyday, but now blogging has grown up and taken on a different life in these interwebs. I’m finally moving to a new blog home with what I hope is a more focused blogging voice.
This new blog will still be primarily a personal blog: a place for me to record what’s going on in life and communicate with family and friends near and far, punctuated with the occasional op-ed type piece. Hopefully Jeff will also chime in from time to time with his perspective on things.
I’m rather proud of this accomplishment! It took me awhile as I wanted to be absolutely sure of what I was doing, but I think it turned out pretty well if I do say so myself.

Look closely at the after picture. As it often goes with house projects, there was a slight hitch: apparently the former owners repainted the ceiling around the old light fixture. Guess what my next project is going to be? Fortunately, I don’t mind painting!
