A New Woman

2011 September 27

I feel like a new woman today. Little Man slept almost 8 hours last night! Some of you may not care or understand, but this is one of the most exciting things that could happen to me right now. :) After a little breakfast, he then slept long enough for me to take a shower, eat breakfast, unload the dishwasher, and do a bunch of laundry-related tasks among other things — all before 11 o’clock! These are all very normal, mundane things, but I haven’t been able to do that since before he was born.

Sadly, I think part of it has to do with him not feeling so well. Poor baby has been fussy, clingy, and gassy the past two days. We balanced a productive morning with an afternoon mostly full of nursing, cuddling, and rocking (which is productive in a completely different way, I suppose).

I’m also wearing a pair of non-maternity jeans today, which goes quite a ways in helping me feel more like my old self again. :)

Oh my word I so know how that feels!!! Bennett was 11 weeks old before he hit the 8 hour stretch at night! I never knew I could do it until it was over. I’m so glad you got some sleep and wearing non-maternity jeans! What a fabulous day! :)

I imagine your body is thanking you for 8 hours of continuous uninterrupted sleep that I hope you were able to have while Sam was slumbering away!

Well, it wasn’t uninterrupted exactly (babies make lots of noises in their sleep that still wakes up mommy), but it was still grand!

Isn’t it amazing what a difference sleep makes?! I’m glad you got some good hours of it.

Can’t you pump and have Jeff take care of the baby one night? Just so you can catch up every now and then? (Lol, I would be a fair-is-fair partner.)

That’s a legit question. Here’s the thing: Jeff has to get up and go to work everyday whereas I can sleep in and take naps if I need to. If I had to go to a job everyday, that’d be a different situation. This arrangement actually seems pretty fair to me. Let’s be honest: it’s more important that Jeff be well rested and thinking clearly for his work than it is for my work at the moment.

Also, pumping is not nearly as efficient as a baby. I’d have to pump for twice as long during the day to get enough for the night. I’m biologically in tune with my baby so I’d wake up when he woke up to eat anyway. I’d probably have to wake up Jeff too. Either I can grab the baby, feed him for 15-20 minutes (night feedings are shorter than day feedings), and go back to sleep without ever turning on a light, OR Jeff can wake up with the baby, go downstairs to get a bottle, heat up some water to heat up a bottle (microwaves are a no-no), and feed a now frantically hungry baby. Plus, nursing is really relaxing and I fall back to sleep much more easily than Jeff does.

      Ah, that makes sense.
