A Surprise Sprinkle

What do you do for a friend who’s expecting baby #2? Sure, people have showers for subsequent babies these days, but it’s not the norm or expected… at least around here.

My friend Kyna is expecting a little boy, Simon, in May. We threw her a big shower the first time around, and I wanted a way to express how we’re all equally as excited to welcome Simon as we were to welcome his big sister Ivy 18 months ago. Enter the baby sprinkle. It’s like a shower, just… smaller. Get it?

Since Kyna wasn’t expecting a shower this time around, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to surprise her. I got some help from her husband, and another friend and I got to planning our small party. We wanted the emphasis to be fellowship, support, and prayer rather than gifts (but we had those too!).

The first Saturday in April, Kyna showed up at Bertie’s house expecting lunch with her friend. Instead she got lunch with a group of friends! We were all waiting for her when she showed up. After the initial shock wore off (she didn’t suspect a thing!), we all enjoyed a leisurely soup and sandwich lunch plus fruit salad, veggies, and cupcakes for dessert.

After lunch, we gathered in a circle to share with and pray for Kyna, baby Simon, and the whole family. Each woman prepared something to share: scripture, song lyrics, advice, prayer. We lit candles to symbolize our circle of friendship and support. At the very end, Kyna opened gifts of clothes and diapers.

These women are like family. I know this little sprinkle was for Kyna, but I was blessed to be in their presence as well.
